| Symptoms |
|
Muscle spasms are
characterized by the sudden onset of an abnormal "pulling" or cramping feeling
which causes you to bend to one side in order to reduce your discomfort. The affected area
is usually hyperextended (rigid or "tight") with the pain subsiding gradually as
the muscle cramps diminish. |
| Possible Causes |
|
Spasms can be caused by
everything from overuse (muscle abuse) to under use (muscle neglect). |
| What To Do If You Have a Spasm? |
| for Immediate Relief when a spasm occurs |
|
When a muscle spasm
strikes, it can often be so painful that you literally don't know what to do next. Here
are some general guidelines: |
|
1. Immediately LIE FLAT
on your back and BEND YOUR KNEES. Place a towel or other soft object under the curve in
your lower back. |
|
2. If this doesn't
provide relief, roll on your side and assume the "FETAL" POSITION. |
|
3. Recognize that muscle
tension is causing your pain and try to RELAX YOUR WHOLE BODY. |
|
4. Remain still until
the severe pain subsides and then ASK FOR ASSISTANCE IN GETTING UP. Follow the "Ice it, Medicate/Manipulate it, Rest it,
Stretch it" guidelines. |
